True Grit Directors: Ethan and Joel Coen “True Grit” is a Western film with many well-known actors like Matt Damon, Jeff Bridges and Josh Brolin. The film plays 1878 in Fort Smith, Arkansas.
Mattie Ross has to go her own way, after her father was shot by the gangster Tom Chaney. With 14 years, she decides to take vengeance and kill the murder of her father. She engages Rooster Cogburn, who’s a drunk, one-eyed U.S Marshall. He should help her to find Tom Chaney, who escaped in an Indian territory. But there’s also LaBoeuf, a Texas Ranger who wants Chaney’s head. Cogburn and LaBoeuf don’t want that Mattie comes with them, but she’s insistent that she also wants to find Chaney.
The film was shot in New Mexico and Texas, the outside scenes were taken in Granger, a little village in Texas. The film plays in winter, but the scenes were filmed in summer, so they gathered all the leaves from the trees you can see in the film.
Another aspect of filmmaking is the financial success. `True Grit` had a budget of 38 million US-$.The earnings of the film were 177 million US-$ in the USA and 245 million US-$ worldwide.
In my opinion, the film isn’t so exciting, because there is no turning point in the story. It’s a chase in the Wild West, nothing else. On the other hand, the actors are very good, especially Jeff Bridges as Rooster Cogburn is fantastic. I would give the film 7 out of 10 points.
In opposite of M.W’s critic “True Grit” got nominated for many awards in many categories, the most famous award is the Oscar. The movie was nominated for the Oscar of the best leading actor (Jeff Bridges), the best leading actress (Hailee Steinfeld), the best costumes and best adaptive scrip. Adaptive scrip means that somebody had already made a film with very similar scrip, so the movie is a remake. Actually before the first movie called The Marshall was published in 1969 Charles Portis wrote a book, also called True Grit, in 1968. So the two movies are based on the roman. In my opinion the movie appears better with all the nominations than it really is, so the way I see it, the important scenes have a lack of excitement for the people watching the western. Furthermore I don’t think that Jeff Bridges did a job which was that good so it’s worth an Oscar nomination. To sum up I have nearly the same opinion of “True Grit” as M.W.
I agree to M.W. that the film is a bit boring. There is only one strand, in which Mattie tries to find the murderer of her father. The actress Hailee Steinfeld as “Mattie” persuaded in her part. For “True Grit” she has been nominated for 17 different awards and won 14 of them. Jeff Bridges as US-Marshal “Rooster Cogburn” had been nominated 13 times, but did not won an award for this film, although I think he acted at a very high level. Like M.W. I would give “True Grit” 7 of 10 points, because although the story is a bit dreary the actors did a great job
