Monsoon Wedding (2001)

  1. Chaotic Wedding in India

Monsoon Wedding is about an Indian wedding, shortly before the monsoon rain.
The romantic drama plays in modern India in New Dehli. The leading character of the film is Aditi Verma, which is played by Vasundhara. And also Naseeruddin Shah, Lillete Dubey and Parvin Dabas can be seen.

Aditi Verma is a young lady, who has decided to agree to an arranged marriage with Hemant Rai, after she had finished her affair with her boss. Her father Lalit Verma, who lives in an arranged marriage by himself, organises the ceremony together with the wedding planner Dubey.
P.K. Dubey himself has little notion of relationships and marriage, however, he falls in love during the wedding preparation with the employee Alice. Aditis cousin Ayesha Verma falls in love with Rahul Chadha, who studies in Sidney and has specially arrived for the wedding. Self-confidently Ayesha tries to show Rahul more of the modern India. Aditis other cousin Ria wants to become an author. At the end of the film her small sister Alija gets into danger, so Ria ventilates a heavy secret of her past.

Conspicuously in the film is the Indian music. From the outset the action is accompanied by home music what underpins the dramatic action. The Compositions “Aaj Mera Jee Kardaa”, “Aaj Mausam Bada Beimann Hai” and “Chunari Chunari” were specially written for this film. At the day before the wedding they celebrated a party on which Ayesha danced to this Indian music.

Another very important aspect of the film are the costumes. The actors wear during the whole film typically Indian clothes. The summit of the film is the wedding in which Aditi wears a traditional wedding garment.

In my opinion it was spoken too much Indian in the film. Although there were used subtitles for these passages, it was difficult to follow the action. Also the translation into English is marked by strong Indian accent. To sum up, I have not liked the film, because many action ropes were extremely bewildering in connection with the Indian language.

  4. I think RS did a great job describing the complicated story line. Even if you watch the film it's hard to understand what is going on because of some time gaps. Sometimes the act is not comprehensible for example how quick Aditi decides to marry Hemant Rai and even seems to be in love with him even though she just wanted to cancel the wedding and cheated on him.
The actors are not bad but also not quite good. Sometimes it gets a bit cheesy but I think this is a part of the Indian culture in which you get a good insight by watching the movie.

At the whole the film is OK, but I wouldn't watch it a second time. There are better Indian movies for those who are interested in that culture. 3 out of 10 points. LG

  5. I think RS summed up the whole story really good, also the description how the music is used in the film. I agree with RS that there is too much spoken Indian in the film and it’s really hard to understand what the people talking about. The Idea of the story is clever and if the actors would talk more English the film would be better. In my opinion the actors are in general not so good, they can’t convince the viewer of their story, because they show their feelings in a curious way.
I support LG’s opinion that you get a good insight of the Indian culture, because of the Indian clothes, food, traditions and of course of the place, where the story was played.
On the whole I’d like to say that I haven’t enjoyed the film, although the Indian culture is interesting.
I would give 2 out of 10 points.
