  1. Sorry for the delay, but I had technical problems posting the review.

    Film Review: The Social Network

The drama and biography “The Social Network” was released in 2010 and features Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield and Justin Timberlake. The film takes place at Harvard University in Cambridge.
The movie starts in the year 2003, where Mark Zuckerberg is left by his girlfriend Erica. In cause of his rage against her and girls in general, he and his friend Eduardo develop a website called “FaceMatch”, where students of Harvard can rate a girls attractiveness. The success of the service causes that the university network crashes and therefore his servers were made inaccessible. As a penalty he gets six months of parole time. The twins Tyler and Cameron take note of the success of Marks website, so they ask him to work with them on a social network service. Zuckerberg agrees. But in the next few weeks he steals the idea and works on his own social network. In this situation you see very good how he is aligned to success. He doesn‘t care that he stole an other‘s spiritual. In his work Mark gets supported by Eduardo and his classmates Chris and Dustin. He recognizes that the key thing that people want to know in the internet is, what friends do, unlike other social networks, that concentrate on chatting and photo sharing. So he wants to offer exactly that, and he called it “thefacebook.com”. It grows in popularity very fast. One day Zuckerberg meets the founder of the music platform “Napster” Sean Parker, who soon becomes his mentor. Parker organizes money to support the website and changes its domain to “facebook.com”. After a dispute between Mark and him, he was forced out of the company. This is a good example of Zuckerbergs egoism, you will see throughout the movie. Sean Parker and the twins Tyler and Cameron take him to court. The movie always changes between court negotiations and flashbacks that show the formation of Facebook.
I like how you can see how much mental and technical effort it needs to develop a website. I expected it to be way more easy. In the film you see every step from the little “FaceMatch” Harvard network to the worldwide successful “Facebook”.
Another thing what struck me positively was the film music. It always fits perfect in the situation Mark Zuckerberg is in. At some point it is dramatically and exciting and at another sympathetic or cheerful. However you won‘t find anything else than modern pop and electro music.
All in all the “The Social Network” really convinced me. The actors fit very good in the role, except Justin Timberlake who seems a bit ill-occupied in playing Sean. The location is well chosen and causes that you can dive into the live of a Harvard student and accompany him. The dramaturgy seems good, however I hoped to get more suspense. Especially I would share this movie to everybody who is interested in tech or website developing, but you probably also will understand it of outside. I watched the film in English and German and I must admit that the German synchronization can‘t compete with the original. I give the film 9/10 points.
