District 9 is a science-fiction movie, which was published in 2009. The director Neill Blomkamp created the movie as a kind of documentation where the story of main character Wikus van de Merwe is told. The movie starts in the year 1982 when an alien spaceship lands near Johannesburg. The extra-terrestrial inhabitants of the ship, which are called “prawns”, settle near Johannesburg, because their ship can’t start anymore. After a couple of years an organisation called MNU has the task to re-settle the prawns to another place outside of Johannesburg, so that the prawns aren’t a danger for the people living next to them. Wikus is elected as the leader of this operation and so he has to inform the aliens in district 9 that they will have to move. As the aliens aren’t very cooperative and sometimes even aggressive, it’s a difficult job. During the operation Wikus gets in contact with a fluid, which turns him into an alien more and more. After the MNU finds out about his slow transformation the corporation tries to get his DNS and his body so they can use the alien weapons. That’s because no human can use them except of Wikus. Therefore Wikus has to escape and hides in district 9, where he meets Christopher, an especial prawn, who has collected the fluid to repair the alien spaceship, so he and his people can escape from earth, where they get terribly treated. After Christopher tells Wikus that he can help him to turn into a human again with the technology on the spaceship Wikus helps Christopher to steal the liquid from the MNU-base. Finally Wikus, who isn’t a friend of the prawns, dies by trying to help Chris to escape. In my opinion it’s an exciting movie, but I don’t like the concept of the documentation at all, because it takes some of suspense sometimes. On the other hand with the documentation style you can give much information in a short time, because you don’t have to explain everything very detailed, so you can make the people watching the movie think about and link the information themselves. All in all it’s a good movie with a new idea of presenting the whole story, but it isn’t perfect.
I absolutely agree with you, that the concept of the movie to mix a sci-fi film and a documentation is not a bad idea, but also takes sometimes some suspense. I generally like Science Fiction movies, and this film is very informative too. Especially Sharlto Copley, who plays Wikus Van De Merwe is very convincing. I advise you to watch the movie and give it 8 out of 10 points.
