Fever Pitch (1996)

  1. Fever Pitch – A football / love match made in heaven

"Fever Pitch" is a romance produced in 1989, starring Colin Firth (The King's Speech) as Paul, a teacher with an obsession for football, especially his team Arsenal London, and Ruth Gemmell as Sarah.
The whole story is about the love story between Sarah and Paul. Sarah comes as a new teacher to Paul's school and they find out that they disagree in their teaching methods as well as in their idea of life. Despite all these differences, they fall in love with each other. It works out for a while, but then Paul's football obsession starts to get on Sarah's nerves because she doesn't understand why he likes watching 22 men run after a ball.
The reasons for his hobby are described in backward time-jumps showing Paul's childhood with his abroad living father, who took him to football games.
Still, Sarah and Paul separate and come together because of various reasons. In the end, Paul tries to control the time he spends watching football in order to keep Sarah, who doesn't trust him to stick to his plan.
I think "Fever Pitch" is a rather uneventful movie, because you can guess very early on how it will end, and because it stickt so generally assumed cliches. As well it sometimes goes too fast and leaves you one step behind, especially in the scene after the parents evening at school, when Paul drives Sarah home.
Something I liked about the movie were the parts that showed Paul's past and the reasons for his football obsession.
All together, I'd give "Fever Pitch" 5 out of 10 possible points, because it takes too long in some scenes and shortens parts I'd have liked to understand better.

  2. In some points I really do agree with you, but also having watched the film I can add, that the expression “boring” or "uneventful" is friendly said a big understatement.

The film (alleged a comedy) tells an unimaginative, steered by clichés love story about the teacher Paul, who is obsessed by football and about Sarah, who is a teacher as well. During the “moving” story Sarah and Paul are becoming a couple, but for Paul, football is more important than Sarah. I won’t spoil you the ending of Fever Pitch but I’m sure that you might guess it.
During watching “Fever Pitch” understanding the language wasn’t my problem, but trying to stay awake definitely was.

All in all I really can’t recommend the film to you, unless you have problems with falling asleep. That’s why I rate this film with 0 out of 10 points.
