''The virgin suicides'' , a tragedy by Sofia Coppola , which is played in the 1970's in a suburban neighborhood in the US. The film is narrated by the view of man, who tells what happened 25 years ago . It is about 5 sisters : -Cecilia (Hanna R. Hall) -Lux (Kirsten Dunst) -Mary (A.J.Cook) -Therese (Leslie Hayman) -Bonnie (Chelse Swain) who have very strict and religious parents Mr.Lisbon (James Woods) and Mrs.Lisbon (Kathleen Turner). The boys in the neighborhood are crazy about the girls, because of their beauty, so one of them sees Cecila how she was trying to kill herself. After that she is sent to a psychologist . He says it was a cry of help, so he advises the parents the interaction with boys. That's why the parents organise a party for their daughters. But the situation changes , while Cecilia's sisters and their guests amuse, Cecila commits suicide. Everyone is talking about that, the other 4 girls go to school like nothing has happened. Later Trip (Josh Hartnett) , a pupil , every girl is in love with, falls in love with Lux. He asks her parents to take her to the dancing night at school. After Trip has called together three other boys for Lux sisters. They go to the ball and had a lot of fun . Lux spends the night with Trip on the football field and get closer . When she wakes up, she is alone and returns at home. She has never seen him again since this date. Her parents don't leave their daughters anymore out of the house. But the extreme care of the Lisbon's changes to a disaster....
The costumes the people wear in the film are very old-fashioned, so that you recognize directly that it is played in the 1970's , because it isn't very modern. The boys on Cecilia's ''party'' wear a suit and shirt and not jeans and aren't carelessly dressed. The girls wear dresses with floral pattern , which look very trashy and well-behaved. In school students wear a school uniform. Moreover the bell-bottoms is typical for the fashion of the 1970's .
The Sound Track ''Air'' emphasizes the sad and dolorous atmosphere of the 5 sister. You feel sorry for their life and destiny of the distraught and lonely teenagers . The situation at home is tight, lifeless and without love. The colours a very grey and dreary. The Sountrack is playful , it suits with the character. After Cecilia's death, Mr.Lisbon come in the dark room with an open window, what reminds him of Cecilia's suicide. The music gives the impression something fatal will happen, he sees his dead daughter Cecilia in the room. From the time when Lux was going out with Trip and kissed him and drive with the other boys to the dance night, the music was cheerful and underlines the romantic moment between them. By the moment Trip sells Lux down the river the nightmare comes back... (In the end of the film you can see the important role of the music for the teenagers.) The film shocks at first, as a result of the suicide in such a young age out of desperation ,helplessness and unhappiness. It isn't easy to feel with the girls , because you couldn't compare our life with the teenager's life in the tragedy and understand their action. In my opinion the film is believable ,because the actors are authentic. I wouldn't watch the film again , because it isn't a enjoyable and comical film to laugh about. It is a serious , tragic and mysterious story. It isn't a film I would suggest to watch , but maybe it is good to see once the destiny of these young girls .
At first I was shocked. I didn’t belive that Cecilia commited suicide. I thought it was only a dream of one of the girls or the parents so it was amazing for me in this scene. And also I think the most interesting girl is Lux. She changed her mind and everything of her during the film. At first she was a nice and well-behaved girl but after the death of her little sister Cecilia she gets very deceitful and also the relationship she had to Trip broke up. For me the most important thing in the movie is the point of view how the boys from the neighborhood tell the story about the girls. And also the most affecting scene is the last, when the boys admitted themselves that they had always loved the 5 girls so much. I think the movie is very interesting because of the difficult situation in this family, but I don’t want to watch a movie like this again because for me it is too dramatically and also too sad. However “The Virgin Suicide” is intoxicating and also very exciting so I would give the film 7 out of 10 points. (197 words) SB
