Welcome to the north sea in the year 1966 on board of the 'Radio Rock', together with Philip Seymour Hoffman, Bill Nighy, Rhys Ifans, Nick Frost, Kenneth Branagh and many more, the hosts of the Radio Rock-program. That´s the basic set for the comedy 'The Boat That Rocked'. The movie got two main stories running simultaneously, the first about the main character, Carl Young, who´s mother sent him to the crew of the Radio Rock, so he learns what it means to be a man, the second story about the radio crew in general, their show and the fight with the english government. Although Rock and Roll music is about to experience its bloomy prime, the BBC rarely plays rock or pop music. Therefore the pirate music stations exist, which are boats airing the music people want to hear 24 hours a day, always sailing in the twilight zone of illegality. As Young Carl enters the boat he gets to know the crew, with whom he will discover a very wild time. It all begins with 'The Count', the only american aboard „accidently“ cursing while he is on the microphone. That´s when the government starts to fight the pirates by prohibiting english businesses to make contracts with the rock and pop distributors, so they will run out of money. But Quentin, the boss of the station, counters with the employment of the very popular DJ Gavin. His plan works and the actually retired DJ brings the success they needed, but he is also a rival for 'The Count', who was the most famous host until Gavins´ arrival. On his 18th birthday, Quentin introduces Carl to his niece Marianne, a stunning girl, so it takes Carl about one moment to fall in love with her, but even though they flirt heavily, Marianne sleeps with Doctor Dave, another host, as he seduces her. But the devastated Carl soon gets cheered up by his shipmates and in the end she returns to apologize and it´s finally his turn. One day, Simon, another host of the radio announces that he will marry a girl he knew for 2 weeks and they all celebrate a lot, but the marriage with his beautiful wife lasts only 17 hours after she told him, she only married him to be on the boat with DJ Gavin, as it was the only way as a woman to stay for a longer time aboard. His no-longer wife stays for just one more night and leaves the next morning, after sleeping with Gavin. In order to defend Simons´ honor, The Count challenges Gavin to a game of chicken, a game where both have to climb up the ship as far as possible and the jump down into the water. Both get hurt and that is how peace came back to Radio Rock. Meanwhile, the government found a way to ban the pirate stations, but the crew tries to fight their arrestment after spreading music despite the prohibition by relocating their station. But the old Radio Rock boat cannot stand the pressure, so the engine explodes and causes the ship to sink. The most important part of this movie is definetly and by no doubt the rock and pop music from the sixties. You will hear famous songs by The Kinks, The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Yardbirds, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Hollies and a very lot more, always well selected and fitting to the situation.
As a fan of this music it was the best part of this movie because it is always great to recognize a song you like in a movie, but it´s even better if you get that feeling every five minutes. One scene, when the crew gets female visitors, is very remarkable. It shows 'Midnight Mark', a man who could be Jim Morrisons double (Jim Morrison was the lead singer of The Doors, once called the sexiest man alive, just like Hendrix, by the way a member of Club 27 just like Mr. Hendrix, Janis Joplin,Kurt Cobain,...) in between 30-40 naked women. Jimi Hendrix´ masterpiece, the album Electric Ladyland, the finest piece of music I have encountered so far, has as cover a picture of a bunch of naked women, just like it is shown in this scene, even the surroundings and the lights fit. Well, in the end, 'The Boat That Rocked' is not only a masterpiece for fans of the music or the style shown aboard of the 'Radio Rock', but also for every fan of comedy. Although I felt very bad for Simon and Carl when they get their hearts broken, it is a totally hilarious movie and not only for, but especially for fans of the Stones, Hendrix, the Who usw... I would give this movie a 8 out of 10 points.
The summary includes everything what is important to understand the plot of the film. I agree with MP that the best part of the film is the rock and roll and pop music of the 1960's , which make the film more amusing and entertaining . I like to add that I also like the whole scenes, because it is impressive how all the men on the boat have so much passion on their radio-show and music and work together in a good organised team without many problems. Another reason, why I like the film is the great atmosphere, as well the people who listen to the pirate radio, who are crazy about the rock radio rock and love it so much, what makes the film easy to watch. Moreover I liked the actors, who are playing there with their interesting and different charater. They look typically like the people in the 60's. All in all the film was well created. I would give ''The Boat that rocked'' 8 out of 10 points, too.
I also really enjoyed the film and especially the music. I think the actors' very different characters were interesting and funny, too. I had a lot of fun watching the movie and didn't want it to be over because it didn't get boring. I also think the film photography was great. The colours and the way of filming change between the scenes with the government and the scenes on the Radio Rock ship. While the camera shakes a little on the boat and the colours are warm and vivid, the exact opposite happens in the government scenes. Director and screen writer Richard Curtis who also made "Love actually", "Bridget Jones" and "Four weddings and a funeral" did a great job creating this feel-good movie. I would give this film also 8 out of 10 possible points.
