The Damned United (2009)

  1. The film "The Damned United" is movie with Michael Sheen as Brian Clough, Timothy Spall as Peter Taylor and Colm Meaney as Don Revie. It is a drama about football which plays in the english towns Derby, Leeds and Brighton between 1968 and 1974. It is based on a true story.

In 1968 Brian Clough and Peter Taylor are the managers of the english Second Division football club Derby County. In the Fa cup they have to play against Leeds United, the big favorite. Brian is aims to be a good host, but Don Revie, the manager of Leeds refuses to shake his hands. Brian gets very mad at him and wants revenge. Derby loses the match by 0-2. After this defeat Brian Clough and Peter Taylor sign an old, but experienced player who helps them to promote to First Division. In their 1971/1972 season Derby wins the Championship. In their next season Derby plays in the European Cup, but Brian risk the European Cup semi-final by not preventing his players from damage in their match against Leeds United. Derby loses 3-1 against Juventus. After the defeat Brian gets in trouble with the chairman of Derby County and as a result he gets sacked. After his resignation at Derby he has the choice between going on with his partner Peter as managers in Brighton or alone as manager of the current champions Leeds United. He loses his first matches and he has conflicts with his players. After only 44 days as manager of Leeds United he gets sacked again. Brian knows it was a fault to leave Peter alone and apologizes.

One big aspect of filmmaking in this movie is the big rivalry between Brian and Don Revie. The movie shows the bad relationship very good in the interview with both at the end very well.

Another aspect of filmmaking is the good costume design. The costumes and the hairstyles look like in 1970. I could not believe the film was released in 2009.

In my opinion "The Damned United" is a great movie especially for football fans, because it show the difficulties in football business very well. Also Michael Sheen plays his role as Brian Clough inimitable. I rate the movie with 9 out of 10 points.
